Johnson and Valentine Join Reds as Advisers
Davey Johnson and Bobby Valentine, former managers who interviewed for the job won by Tony Perez, were hired by the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday in scouting and advisory roles.
Johnson, former manager of the New York Mets, was named the Reds’ major league consultant, a job that includes scouting teams during spring training.
Valentine, former manager of the Texas Rangers, was named advance scout and adviser for player personnel.
“I’d love to manage. I think that’s where I’m best used at,” Johnson said from his Orlando, Fla., home. “But if I can assist a manager or general manager in any way, that’s fine.”
Jim Bowden, the Reds’ new general manager, said: “We continue to surround our organization with outstanding baseball minds.”
