California / IN BRIEF : Tourist Dies in Sky-Diving Accident
A Japanese tourist was killed and another tourist injured when their parachutes tangled as they were sky-diving over the desert, officials said. Seiji Watanabe, 24, of Chiba was pronounced dead at Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center in Lancaster, where he was flown by helicopter after the New Year’s Eve accident at the popular sky-diving area, officials said. Toshiki Aimahori, 23, was treated for a broken ankle, broken ribs and internal injuries and was released Friday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said. The two parachutists were members of a Japanese group that has been taking jumps for two weeks at the town’s airport, in the desert about 75 miles north of Los Angeles.
