USC, three days after a 24-7 Freedom Bowl loss to Fresno State, announced the resignation of football coach Larry Smith.
“This resignation comes after discussions the past two weeks with Larry about the future of the program, given the circumstances, and the concerns we had,” USC Athletic Director Mike McGee said in a statement.
Smith, also in the statement released by the school, said he was sorry he did not have a chance to speak with the players before USC announced his departure.
“I walk away from the program with my head up,” Smith said.
Smith, 53, who led the Trojans to three Rose Bowl appearances in his first three seasons, finished with a 44-25-3 record in six years at USC.
