WESTLAKE : Plans for Apartment Buildings Finalized

Share

The Pico-Union Housing Corp. and a Century City-based developer are teaming up to build 111 apartments in Westlake for low- and moderate-income tenants.

Two four-story buildings will be constructed at 727 S. Carondelet St. and 722 S. Coronado St., said Gil Seton, president of Showplace Development, one of the project’s partners.

The four-story buildings will have apartments with one to four bedrooms and average rents between $400 and $500, Seton said.

Plans call for the 47-unit Carondelet Village and the 64-unit Coronado Village to include community rooms, courtyards, educational facilities and social services support for tenants, he said.

Construction could begin by spring, Seton said.

The City Council recently approved $3.7 million in loans from the Housing Preservation and Production Department for the two projects. Other funding will come from a combination of government and private lenders, including SAMCO, a lending consortium, and the Century Freeway Housing Program.

The state created the Century Freeway Housing Program in 1979 to fund construction of affordable housing and to provide training and contracting opportunities for businesses owned by women and minorities, said Susan Price, a spokeswoman for the program.

Established in 1971, the Pico-Union Housing Corp. has developed more than 500 units for low- and moderate-income tenants, and sponsors a number of community activities, including cleanups, nutrition programs and referral services.
