SOUTH-CENTRAL : Sale of Beer, Wine at Market Opposed

Citing an abundance of liquor outlets in South-Central, activists say they will oppose the sale of beer and wine at a riot-damaged Arco AM/PM mini-market and gas station that has applied to begin reconstruction. The application will be considered at a Monday hearing at City Hall.

The Community Coalition for Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment said liquor sales at the AM/PM outlet at 4400 S. Broadway have contributed to loitering and crime in the area.

Ronald Carlock, an Arco representative who has applied to rebuild the mini-market and gas station, said the sale of beer and wine is crucial to the store’s success: “We have an obligation to get something back if we choose to build a new store. The sale of beer and wine is not the cause of all problems in that area.”

Members of the community coalition said the controversy highlights the issue of providing quality services that will not attract a disruptive element.

“(South-Central residents) want the same amenities like any little suburb,” said Silvia Castillo, a leader of the community coalition. “They want to get milk without having their lives threatened.”

The public hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday in Room 561-A of City Hall, 200 N. Spring St.
