A Better Way of Gift Giving

In regard to the article on gift giving (“Keeping Your Presence of Mind During the Holiday Season,” Dec. 21), has it occurred to the author or any of those interviewed that Christmas is not about “the perfect gift,” “obligation gifts,” and “prioritizing your list?”

When there are so many needy people in the world, this type of article is truly appalling and depressing.

Wouldn’t a donation on behalf of the recipient to one of hundreds of worthwhile causes be more meaningful? Is the exchange of bottles of alcohol, neckties and fruitcake really an indicator of “who is important in your life?” Is the reason for giving really “if you think you’ll be getting something from them?”
