BRUSSELS : New EC Commission
The European Community will display a new emphasis on its relations with the rest of the world when the 1993-1994 model of the EC’s executive commission holds its first meeting Wednesday.
Frenchman Jacques Delors is still the commission’s president, but seven of its 16 other members are new.
Responsibility for the EC’s external relations has been split. Newcomer Hans van den Broek, the former Dutch foreign minister, is in charge of political relations--in particular, the EC’s negotiations with would-be members Austria, Sweden, Finland and Norway. Holdover Leon Brittan of Britain, a dedicated free-trader who had the antitrust portfolio in the last EC commission, is responsible for trade policy.
