Racing Officials Set Deadline for Next Step Involving Coalition

A deadline of Jan. 20 was set for each aspect of the industry to select two representatives to the California Horse Racing Industry Coalition, a follow-up to the recent two-day conference in Pasadena at which the sport’s problems were addressed.

About 75 owners, trainers, Hollywood and Santa Anita track officials and other people in the industry attended a 90-minute meeting after the races Wednesday at Santa Anita and agreed on the deadline.

The objective of the coalition, suggested by Chris Clark, a horse owner, and Cliff Goodrich, Santa Anita’s president, would be to meet and discuss racing’s problems and, it is hoped, work toward solving them. Possible representatives on the coalition are to be submitted to the California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Assn.

Trainer Brian Mayberry was among those who attended Wednesday’s meeting, but he departed long before it concluded.

“I’ve had enough with all the committees. I want to do what’s right for the game. If you want to let Las Vegas be the dog that wags the tail, go ahead,” Mayberry said before walking out the door.
