LOS ANGELES : Salvadoran Activists Hit Stalling on Peace Plan

Share

Salvadoran community activists on Thursday accused El Salvador’s government of stalling implementation of United Nations-brokered peace accords ending the country’s 12-year civil war.

Carlos Ardon, interim executive director of the Central American Refugee Center, said Salvadoran President Alfredo Cristiani’s failure to purge senior military officials responsible for human rights violations is stopping refugees in Los Angeles from returning home.

The purging of more than 100 senior military officials responsible for human rights violations and other crimes was a key component of the peace accords between the Salvadoran government and the rebel Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN).
