World IN BRIEF : ANGOLA : Government Defeats Rebels in 3 Cities
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Government forces have overwhelmed UNITA rebels in at least three cities after a weeklong offensive in which more than 1,000 people died, diplomats said in Luanda, the Angolan capital. They said UNITA has been routed in its stronghold of Lobito and in the coastal cities of Namibe and Benguela and has apparently withdrawn from Caxito, about 40 miles northeast of Luanda. A 1991 peace accord ending 16 years of civil war broke down after UNITA refused to accept its defeat by the ruling party in a September election.
