World IN BRIEF : POLAND : Lawmakers Approve Draft Abortion Law
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The lower house of Parliament approved a draft law limiting women’s freedom to have abortions, but it rejected proposals to ban abortion altogether. The draft was a compromise between parties backed by Poland’s powerful Roman Catholic Church and liberals and left-wingers who favor a less restrictive bill. The new bill allows abortion in cases of rape or incest, when a prenatal test shows the fetus is seriously and irreparably damaged and when there is serious danger to the life or health of the mother.
