* George J. Kuhrts III has been named chairman of the Bank of San Diego, a unit of BSD Bancorp Inc.

Kuhrts succeeds James S. Brown, who will continue as chairman and chief executive of BSD Bancorp.

The appointment of a new chairman of the Bank of San Diego was required by regulators as a condition for the recently approved merger of American Valley Bank and Coast Bank into the Bank of San Diego. Frank J. Mercardante was recently named president and chief executive of the Bank of San Diego, and additional outside directors will be added to the bank’s board during the first hal1f of 1993, the company said.

Kuhrts is now president and chief executive of North American Trust Co., a trust services unit of BSD Bancorp, and a director of both the Bank of San Diego and BSD Bancorp.
