COUNTYWIDE : Prototype Freeway Call Box for Deaf Motorists to Be Built

Share

Deaf motorists would be able to summon help at freeway call boxes under a new system proposed by the Ventura County Transportation Commission.

At a meeting Friday, the commission approved an agreement with U.S. Commlink, which will build a prototype call box equipped with a small keyboard for the deaf.

The company’s prototype will be built at no cost to the commission.

Two other companies bid on the project but requested money to cover some of the development costs.

Commission staff members said U.S. Commlink is developing new call-box technologies and views the keyboard for deaf motorists as an extension of that work.

When the prototype is built, the company must return to seek a contract to build more units for installation on highways throughout Ventura County.
