GRANADA HILLS : State Revokes License of Care Home for Elderly
- Share via
State officials have revoked a Granada Hills couple’s license to run a care home for the elderly, saying the two admitted a bedridden man with serious medical problems they were not competent to care for.
The state Department of Social Services also cited dirty conditions and incompetent staff at the facility in canceling Felix and Lilia Garcia’s license to run their Lily of the Valley Care Home.
Authorities said the bedridden man was admitted while suffering from skin ulcers on his hips and buttocks and had a surgically implanted catheter--conditions requiring hospital care. Although he could not get out of bed, the home had fire clearance only for ambulatory residents, state officials said.
Kathleen Maylin, a lawyer for the Garcias, said the man developed his ulcers in a hospital and was later readmitted to the care home by Lilia Garcia after pleas by the man’s son, a police officer. “She made a mistake, no question about it,” Maylin said. “But she did it at the family’s request.”
