Fighting between government troops and small bands of rearmed Contras in northern Nicaragua has left at least 11 dead and 20 wounded, an army spokesman said Friday.

“In fierce fighting begun on Monday . . . we have inflicted on the ‘re-Contras’ at least eight dead, 15 wounded and five prisoners,” spokesman Milton Sandoval said.

He added that one policeman and two civilians were killed and five government troops wounded.

Sandoval said the fighting, the heaviest confirmed by the government recently, was taking place in the provinces of Esteli, Jinotega, Nueva Segovia and Matagalpa.

The “re-Contras” are a group of a few hundred former members of the 30,000-strong U.S.-backed rebels who fought in Nicaragua’s eight-year civil war until it ended in 1990.
