GARDEN GROVE : Buckling Down on Seat Belt Offenders

Share

The Police Department will conduct seat belt checkpoints at unannounced times and in random places this year, according to Sgt. Jack Ray.

Motorists and passengers who are not wearing seat belts will be issued citations, Ray said. Officers will also enforce child passenger safety laws, he said.

“The public has had plenty of time to absorb the information and requirements in reference to the seat belt law,” Ray said. “At this point, I don’t think there is an excuse that will satisfy our officers if you’re caught not wearing a seat belt. If you’re not buckled up, you’re going to pay the price.”

The maximum fine for a first-time offense is $22, Ray said. Subsequent offenses increase the fine to $55, he said.

Drivers with passengers under 4 years old or weighing less than 40 pounds who are not restrained in child safety seats face a fine of $270.
