New Computers Shipped: AST Research Inc., the personal-computer maker in Irvine, said it has begun shipping its Manhattan SMP multiprocessor computer that is aimed at replacing ordinary minicomputers in large corporations.

AST signed a distribution pact with Tech Data Corp., a distributor in Clearwater, Fla., to sell the machines, which contain as many as four microprocessors to improve the computer’s speed and ability to handle multiple tasks at once.
