THOUSAND OAKS : City OKs Use of Asphalt Roofing

Share

In a move aimed at making it easier for homeowners to replace worn wooden shingles, the Thousand Oaks City Council decided unanimously Tuesday to allow the use of asphalt roofing materials on apartments, townhouses and condominiums.

The changes to the city’s residential guidelines make it possible for existing multifamily projects and attached single-family residences to re-roof with asphalt instead of wood shakes or shingles.

Detached single-family residences already are allowed to switch to the cheaper, more fire-retardant material some consider aesthetically inferior to wooden and clay counterparts.

The asphalt roofs are considerably cheaper than wood shake and are cheaper and lighter than the clay and concrete tiles used in the city.
