Rally by UCI Women Falls Short in Loss to San Jose State

The UC Irvine women’s basketball team rallied twice in the second half and led by as many as four points with four minutes remaining before losing to San Jose State, 85-75, in a Big West Conference game Thursday at the Bren Center.

The Anteaters (1-11, 0-4 in the Big West) went on a 12-0 run midway through the second half and took the lead, 55-54, when Jinelle Williams completed a three-point play with 10 minutes 52 seconds left. San Jose regained the lead and had a six-point advantage before Irvine rallied again, taking a four-point lead with 4:12 left on a 19-foot shot by Karie Yoshioka.

But San Jose State rallied and made 13 of 14 free throws down the stretch. UCI’s Davette Williams scored a career-high 23 points and Yvonne Catala had 17 points.

San Jose’s Hulett Brooks had 24 points and 14 rebounds.

In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s basketball:

CS Dominguez Hills 75, Chapman 34--Poor shooting doomed the Panthers (2-11, 0-1 in the CCAA) to a lopsided loss at the Hutton Center.

Chapman made 21.3% of its shots from the field, including 11% (two of 18) from beyond the three-point line, and 25% (three of 12) from the free-throw line. Chapman made only four of 29 shots in the first half and trailed, 34-9, at halftime.

Melody Earle, the only Chapman player to score in double figures, had 13 points.
