There’s a Pair of Hose Right for Any Outfit

We’ve all heard the catchy tune, “She’s got legs . . .,” but the question is: Does she know how to use them?

With the countless hosiery options offered today, it’s not surprising that many women get confused about what to wear with what. When are patterned stockings appropriate? Are off-black nylons always the most flattering? Are natural skin tone stockings with nude toe and heel the most versatile for any occasion?

As Nordstrom hosiery buyer Tembra Hammond says, “Hosiery is meant to complement an outfit. It can enhance and actually help pull together a complete look. But whether it’s done correctly is what makes the difference.”

According to Hammond, hosiery trends lean toward “calm neutrals,” which include sand, ivory, beige and soft pastel tones. Olive green is also considered fashionable, as are fishnet patterns in varying sizes. As to what color or pattern fits the occasion, Hammond offers the following suggestions:

* If you are wearing a skirt made of a heavier-weight fabric, wear a stocking in a subtle tone of the skirt. This will create height, particularly if the shoe is in the same color.

* Avoid wearing a lightweight skirt with a heavy stocking. The skirt will cling to the stocking.

* Do not wear white stockings with bone or beige shoes; the shades are just enough off to make the legs or shoes appear dirty.

* Unless the occasion is fun and casual, stay clear of exotic-colored stockings--especially when dressing for a serious business meeting. Your audience will notice your legs before they hazard a glance at your face.

* Tights (heavier versions of panty hose) are classy when teamed with garments that have weight and texture.

* For a person who is short and stocky, it is advisable to match the stocking to the clothing color. This will produce an elongated illusion.

* Off-black hosiery should only be worn with black or darker tones such as burgundy or gray. It looks tacky when paired with light tones.

* Although fishnet stockings are generally considered whimsical and sexy, those with small, subtle patterns may be acceptable for career wear.

* Heavier stockings (or tights) are most flattering when worn with flat or low heel shoes; sheer stockings when worn with high heel shoes.

* The perennial basic is still considered the nude leg look and is appropriate for all occasions.
