LOS ANGELES : 2 Veteran City Hall Aides to Run for Council Seats

Share

Two longtime City Hall employees have announced their candidacies for City Council, saying they can provide better service for two of the city’s poorest districts than can the first-term incumbents they are challenging.

In the Eastside 1st District, former mayoral aide Esther Castillo Long will challenge Councilman Mike Hernandez. The Lincoln Heights woman has been active in community organizations and worked for more than a decade as an aide to former Councilman Arthur K. Snyder before joining Mayor Tom Bradley’s staff in 1986.

In the 9th District, which includes South Los Angeles and part of downtown, former council Chief of Staff Bob Gay will face off with Councilwoman Rita Walters for the second time in less than two years. Gay, right-hand man to the late Councilman Gilbert Lindsay for 16 years, lost a bitter contest with Walters in 1991 by just 76 votes.
