Bechtel Wins Nuclear Cleanup Contract: The San Francisco-based construction and engineering firm said it won an $800-million contract for the first phase of a multibillion-dollar cleanup of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington state. The contract covers the first five years of the project, which is expected to take 30 years and eventually cost about $30 billion, Bechtel said. Hanford is the second major nuclear cleanup project awarded by the U.S. Department of Energy in the last year. In August, the DOE chose Fluor Corp. to direct a cleanup of the Fernald uranium plant in Ohio. The Hanford reservation covers 560 square miles in southeastern Washington where plutonium for nuclear bombs was produced from 1944 until the late 1980s.
