100 Inmates Square Off in Brawl at Jail

A brawl involving nearly 100 black and Latino inmates at a Castaic jail left two men with minor injuries Sunday, authorities said.

The melee erupted about 1:15 p.m. in a maximum-security dormitory in the East Facility of the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho, Los Angeles County sheriff’s spokesman Ron Weber said. About 95 inmates divided along racial lines and fought for about a minute and a half.

Sheriff’s deputies broke up the fight by tossing in two “sting balls”--small grenades that explode and spray rubber pellets, Weber said. The two men injured in the brawl, which did not involve any weapons, were taken to County-USC Medical Center.

It was not known whether the brawl was racially motivated, Weber said, adding that its cause is being investigated.
