Five or six young men robbed a jewelry store in Westminster Mall at gunpoint about 2 p.m. Sunday, fleeing in a stolen car after clubbing a man on the head with a handgun, police said.

The young men, who were described as ranging in age from 16 to the early 20s, fled in a wood-paneled Ford station wagon, which they abandoned a short distance from the mall, said Westminster Police Lt. Richard Main.

But residents told police that they saw the suspects then get into another vehicle, described as a 1987 Chevrolet Suburban with a license plate of number of 2FND025, which also had been reported stolen, Main said.

The second car was two-toned, either black or dark blue over light blue, and was last seen at Springdale Street and Westminster Boulevard, Main said.

The extent of the loss at Hudson Goodman Jewelers was not immediately known, police said.

Police did not immediately release the identity of the man who was struck on the back of the head with the robbers’ handgun, but said he was not an employee of the store. He declined treatment and was not believed to have been seriously injured.
