Baird’s Hiring of Immigrants

Share

The Times endorses Baird’s confirmation as attorney general (“Should It Disqualify Her for the Job?” editorial, Jan. 16), after she confesses that she has employed illegal aliens as domestic workers.

The fault, you say, is not in her illegal action, but in bad immigration law that disallows exceptions for domestic workers.

I thought laws were laws until they were changed. Certainly, a person of her supposed learning and moral caliber would not only be aware of the law, but would also respect it, even if she disagrees with it.

Baird’s confirmation will be a slap in the face to the thousands of professional couples who pay the extra hundreds of dollars a month to employ legal domestics simply because they know not to do so is illegal.
