Macedonia
In response to “On the ‘Albanian Question,’ No Answers,” Jan. 11:
With Greece putting people on trial merely for claiming to be Macedonian to the south, and Serbia practicing genocide (ethnic cleansing) to the north, the Republic of Macedonia remains a beacon of democratic hope in the Balkans. Macedonians, Albanians and other ethnic minorities voted to break away from Yugoslavia by 90% and have shown that a multiethnic country is possible. If only its neighbors would leave “Macedonia for the Macedonians,” as William Gladstone suggested well over 100 years ago; the people there are perfectly able to work out their own destiny.
