BURBANK : Council Approves New Trash Fees
The Burbank City Council has approved a new trash program despite the opposition of Mayor Robert Bowne, who contended new fees are anti-family.
The 4-1 vote came Tuesday night after Bowne protested that big families who generate more trash should not have to pay higher rates for garbage pickup.
“There are a lot of people with extended families or larger families and they can’t help that,” Bowne said.
Public Works Director Ora Lampman said the new fees will encourage more people to recycle and would help the city meet state-mandated guidelines to cut waste.
Households will pay $7 a month for weekly collection from a 35-gallon container, $12.77 a month for a 64-gallon container and $20.20 a month for a 101-gallon container.
The city is providing each household with one container, which is to be picked up by the city’s new automated trash trucks. If residents want more containers, they must buy them, Lampman said.
