State’s Economy and Wilson

Share

In his State of the State address, Gov. Pete Wilson evoked “an unspoken bond between the generations . . . the promise parents make to their children to leave them a world of greater opportunity” (Jan. 7). Why, then, did he go on to violate that bond, an important part of which is to tell the truth? For the truth is that the most obvious way in which an older generation selfishly protected its interests at the expense of a younger generation was to pass Proposition 13. Yet, rather than fulfill his “unspoken bond,” he preferred silently to pass over the verifiable effect that Proposition 13 has had on the quality of life for a new generation of Californians.

When will a political leader have the courage to speak out and urge Californians to keep their “solemn promise,” their “especially American obligation,” by overturning Proposition 13?
