CANYON COUNTRY : VFW Post to Vacate by Jan. 28 Deadline

Members of Sand Canyon’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6885, who were ordered by Santa Clarita officials to vacate their building, will sell the facility and move out by the Jan. 28 deadline, VFW officials said Thursday.

The Santa Clarita City Council first ordered the 200-member VFW post to close in August after neighbors complained of loud parties and alcohol use at the two-acre facility.

The post, located in a residential neighborhood, was also operating without a proper zoning permit.

After veterans refused to close the building, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert H. O’Brien stayed the council order in November.

He allowed members to remain until January, but prohibited alcohol sales and overnight camping.

Lou Hunt, quartermaster for the post, said the property entered escrow a week ago after a Canyon Country couple made a bid for it.

Escrow is expected to close in mid-February.

Members will meet at the two-story building until the deadline, Hunt said, and will gather at a temporary location in a lodge until they complete negotiations on another building in a commercial area of Santa Clarita.
