UC Irvine pulled within four points late in the second half before losing to Hawaii, 79-71, in a Big West Conference women’s basketball game Sunday in Honolulu.

The Anteaters went on a 9-0 run, which was capped by Jinelle Williams’ five-foot shot with 4 minutes 16 seconds left, to cut Hawaii’s lead to four, 64-60. But Hawaii scored the next three baskets to regain control.

Yvonne Catala had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Anteaters.

Irvine was playing without its second-leading scorer Carrie Yoshioka, who hurt her back and neck in Friday’s game.
