Countywide : War Games Might Cause Sonic Booms

Share

Sonic booms could rattle Ventura County on Thursday morning as supersonic jets from the Naval Air Weapons Station at Point Mugu take part in war games about 60 miles off the coast.

The booming noises may reach coastal communities between 6 and 11:30 a.m. as aircraft from Point Mugu, such as the F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18 Hornet, break the sound barrier, said Marge Hayes, a spokeswoman for the base.

The planes will probably be staging mock attacks about 60 to 100 miles offshore to test the defenses of ships and aircraft from naval and other military bases along the Pacific Coast, she said.

Changes in wind direction or cloud cover could make the sonic booms more noticeable, Hayes said. Any noise complaints should be directed to Point Mugu’s public affairs office at 989-8094, she said.
