Starting Over: It’s back to the drawing board in Pasadena where a controversial public art project has pitted the city’s arts staff against its own advisory commission. New proposals for a $17,000 award to create a “gateway” project at the Broadway Power Plant will be sought, even though an estimated $10,000 has already been spent on the selection process, which resulted in a panel of independent arts professionals and the staff recommending sculptor Rod Baer. The controversy involves the commission’s decision to overturn the recommendation. The City Council also wants the commission to revise all public art guidelines and define its role in future projects.
