Compton : Council Studies Plan for Auto Mall Shopping Center

Share

The City Council is considering a proposal to build a shopping center with a food court and movie theaters near the planned card casino in the Auto Mall.

At last week’s City Council meeting, the three council members present voted to enter into an exclusive negotiating agreement with a coalition of developers. Councilwoman Patricia A. Moore was absent and the city has been without a mayor because Walter R. Tucker III resigned to take his seat in Congress.

The development coalition includes Urban Venture Partners, Pacific Development Partners, Hackman Equities Inc. and Riley Pearlman/Mitchell Co. The group proposes building a retail center, restaurants and theaters on 28 acres of land owned by the city’s Redevelopment Agency, adjacent to the city-managed Ramada Hotel and a recently approved card casino.

Details of the plan, including purchase price of the land, will be negotiated and spelled out in a development agreement within the next nine months, city officials said.
