The Ventura County Board of Supervisors has endorsed the appointment of a 22-member steering committee to guide the development of a plan to enhance and manage the Santa Clara River.

The committee, endorsed by the supervisors on Tuesday, is headed by flood-control district officials from Ventura and Los Angeles counties. Other members include representatives from the cities of Ventura, Fillmore, Santa Clarita, property owners along the river, and officials from other governmental agencies.

The steering committee’s first meeting is today from 4 to 6 p.m. at Santa Clarita City Hall, 23920 Valencia Blvd.

Developing a blueprint for the river’s future was first envisioned by Supervisor Maggie Kildee and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, who were independently looking for ways to mediate the divergent interests along the channel that stretches 100 miles from Agua Dulce in Los Angeles County to its estuary in Oxnard. The plan for the river will address many issues, including wildlife habitats, mining, flooding problems, agricultural interests, water quality and recreational uses.
