Storm Damage Tops $218 Million
Statewide damage estimates from this month’s storms exceed $218 million, officials said Wednesday, and that does not include crop losses.
Nancy Hardaker of the California Office of Emergency Services said the property damage tally of $218.6 million is expected to increase once farmers’ losses are taken into account.
Gov. Pete Wilson sent the damage estimates to President Clinton in a request for federal help.
Wilson proclaimed emergencies in the counties of San Diego, Riverside, Orange, Imperial, San Bernardino, Fresno, Tulare, Madera, Monterey, Tehama, Trinity, Sierra, Siskiyou, Lassen, Plumas and Modoc, and for the city of Fillmore in Ventura County.
Road workers have filled thousands of potholes and face thousands more. Rain and traffic caused 8,800 of them on Los Angeles County roads alone, a county Public Works Department spokeswoman said.
A creeping landslide caused at least $2 million damage to an upscale Anaheim Hills neighborhood, where the city ordered 46 homes evacuated. Mudslides left dozens homeless in other communities, including San Clemente and Laguna Beach.
