Stanton : Council to Appoint Horton Replacement
The City Council has decided to appoint a replacement to fill the late Councilman William H. Horton’s council seat rather than hold a special election.
Horton died last week of an aneurysm. He was 59.
Under state law, the city must appoint a replacement by Feb. 18, 30 days from Horton’s death.
The council is now seeking applications for the position. The appointee will complete Horton’s four-year term, which ends in November, 1996.
An application form is available at City Hall, 10660 Western Ave. A 200-word statement about how the applicant will work to fulfill the city’s motto, “Community Pride and Forward Vision,” is required.
Applications must be returned to City Hall by 5 p.m. on Feb. 8. The council will interview applicants beginning at 4 p.m. on Feb. 9.
To be eligible, applicants must be residents of Stanton and registered voters. Whoever is appointed must make a financial disclosure to clarify possible conflicts of interest and take an oath of loyalty.
Council meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month starting at 6:30 p.m. Also, the council serves as the Redevelopment Agency, which holds meetings before the council meetings. The appointee must be able to attend these meetings. Salary is $382.86 per month.
