Britain’s new envoy to France on Friday became his island nation’s first envoy to reach an overseas post entirely by land--through the Channel Tunnel.

Because the 31-mile tunnel beneath the English Channel isn’t finished, Sir Christopher Mallaby traded his usual attire--a blue suit and feathered hat--for overalls and a hard hat. He made the three-hour, 40-minute trip aboard a construction train.

“Impressive and pleasant,” Mallaby said in French, after emerging from the tunnel terminal in Sangatte, near Calais, to celebrate with champagne.
