New Lamps Light the Way to Savings

ORANGE — Last summer, city officials invited energy analysts at Southern California Edison Co. to advise them on electrical usage as part of the continuing renovation of City Hall.
After receiving the analysts’ recommendations, city officials replaced 1,308 standard 40-watt fluorescent tubes with 32-watt energy-saving lamps and installed light-enhancing reflectors in the fixtures.
As a result, the city’s electric bill has dropped by more than $1,000 per month and kilowatt-hour usage has declined by more than half, according to Jane Owens, a city spokeswoman.
“They say we are getting more light with less wattage,” Owens said.
Moreover, the city recently received a $3,800 rebate check from Southern California Edison as part of the company’s Energy Hardware Management Rebate Program, which is designed to encourage businesses to modernize their lighting systems to save energy.
City officials say they hope to save almost $15,000 a year on their electricity bills.
