The Bowers Museum of Cultural Art has received a $250,000 grant from Ted Smith of Santa Ana in honor of his wife’s 60th birthday. Janice Frey Smith, who has been associated with the Bowers since 1976--first as a docent and head of docent training--is a member of the museum’s board of governors.
In recognition of the donation, the museum’s 2,500-square-foot gallery of African art will bear Janice Frey Smith’s name. Beginning Feb. 28, the gallery will house the Tishman collection of African art, on long-term loan from the Walt Disney Corp.
This is the second time a gallery-naming gift to the Bowers has been given on the occasion of a birthday. Last summer, the Arts of Native America Gallery was named after Richard Ettinger as a present from his wife, Sharon.
