Mine Workers Strike Peabody Coal: The United Mine Workers of America struck the nation’s largest coal producer, Peabody Coal Co., using it as the target in negotiations with the coal industry, but efforts to restart talks were fruitless. It was the first time since 1984 that a work stoppage was part of negotiations between the union and the Bituminous Coal Operators Assn. Their 1988 pact, which expired late Monday, covered 66,000 miners and hundreds of mines. Peabody employs about 7,700 UMWA members.
