It’s only February. Good heavens, that’s far too early to be thinking about summer.

“Not!” cry the schoolchildren.

And, in truth, they have a point.

Now is an excellent time to plan summertime activities for your little darlings. And to help you do that, Westridge School in Pasadena is having a Summer Opportunities Fair on Saturday.

“The fair is meant to reach boys and girls, kindergarten through 12th grade,” event co-chair Chris Benter said. “We’ll have different exhibits for everyone.”

There will be a booth offering tips on how teen-agers can get jobs, and booths with volunteer opportunities. There will be booths for youngsters who like fine arts, performing arts, tennis, baseball, white-water rafting, horses, marine biology and even foreign languages, such as Arabic or Japanese. AFS Intercultural Programs, a student tour company, will have representatives on hand. The YMCA will have a display.

Several day camps will be represented, as well as camps to go away to. And, yes, there will even be summer schools.

“Unfortunately, when you send out the invitations (to the exhibitors), the high-ticket items are the ones that sign on first,” Benter said.

But for those who feel, well, a little fiscally down in the dumps, several of the exhibitors will offer financial aid in varying amounts, and some will provide less expensive options.

Benter said a carnival atmosphere will prevail, with a “Moonbounce” (75 cents), face painting (75 cents to $1) and other similarly priced activities. In-N-Out Burgers and Shakey’s Pizza will be selling lunch. Each family will get a catalogue of participating exhibitors, and one lucky fair-goer will win a portable compact disc player.

Admission to the fair at the school, 324 Madeline Drive, is free.
