American Airlines May Cut Fleet, Work Force: The nation’s largest airline is considering cutting its jet fleet and closing two hubs, moves that would lead to significant layoffs, said top executives of the airline. Robert Crandall, American’s chairman, said the carrier would decide by the spring whether to return more than two dozen airplanes. The company’s chief financial officer said if the airline exercises its option to return the wide-body jets to Airbus Industrie, major layoffs would follow. The airline is also considering closing money-losing hubs in San Jose and Raleigh-Durham, N.C., the financial officer said.
