South Gate recovered but Trayshon Perkins intercepted a pass and threw the ball to Davis who was unguarded in the middle of the key for the game-winning basket.

“I was so nervous because I was trying so hard,” Davis said. “It felt so good to get another chance.”

Davis finished with a team-high 13 points. Sheila Paige, who had 34 points in a 69-58 loss to Roosevelt on Tuesday, and Perkins had 11 and nine points respectively for Fremont.

Michelle Gonzalez converted a three-point play to give South Gate a 40-37 lead with 44 seconds left. The Rams, who suffered their first defeat since a 53-51 loss to Washington in the first game of the season, was up by as much as 10 in the first half.

“Everybody expected us to win, but we can’t be perfect all the time,” said South Gate forward Ruby Maciel, who had a game-high 21 points. “We needed a loss to help take the pressure off.”

Maciel, a 5-foot-8 freshman, made two free throws to give South Gate a 37-30 lead with five minutes remaining. However, Fremont held the Rams scoreless over the next four minutes.
