From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Prime Minister Paul Keating, ending months of speculation, called a general election for March 13. Keating warned Australia’s 11 million eligible voters that a switch to the conservative Liberal-National coalition, which narrowly leads his Labor Party in the polls, would threaten the national health system and labor-management relations. Polls have said voters are most concerned with the lingering recession and 11% jobless rate.
