Black History Month
“A community of all people brings about unity,” is the theme for this year’s Black History Parade, which will start at 11 a.m. Saturday. The grand marshal will be county Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke. Other events held in conjunction with Black History Month include:

Oratorical Contest Finals--1100 W. Manchester Blvd., Los Angeles. High school students will compete for cash prizes, giving orations on the 1993 theme. Free.
FRIDAY, FEB. 12
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Honors Our Authors Study Club--2528 West Blvd., Los Angeles. A noon luncheon at the Delta Sigma Theta Center for Life Development will feature author-poet Beatrice Garrett reading from her book, “A Bite of Black History” and actress Jessie Holmes performing scenes from “40 Acres and a Mule.” For reservations, call (213) 735-5799.

African Festival--9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Jesse Owens Park, Western Avenue and Century Boulevard. The festival will include a mini-mart with handcrafts, jewelry and clothing, an African fashion show, and Cuban-African and Brazilian-African drummers. African dress is encouraged. Free.

Public Meeting--3:30 p.m., Good Shepherd Baptist Church, 53rd and Figueroa streets, Los Angeles. Dr. Ernest Smith will be the guest speaker and there will be music by the Washington Preparatory High School Choir. A reception will follow. Free.

Coronation/Founders Luncheon--Noon, Airport Marina Hotel, 8601 Lincoln Blvd. The luncheon will feature Queen and King of History Month winners, as well as winners of scholarships in Prince, Princess and Tiny Tot categories. Annual Concert of Negro Spirituals--3:30 p.m., Crenshaw United Methodist Church, 3740 Don Felipe Drive, Los Angeles. Sponsored by the Georgia Laster Branch of the National Assn. of Negro Musicians and Guests, the concert will include music by four choirs. Free.

Book and Film Display--7 p.m., Dublin Avenue Elementary School, 3875 Dublin Ave., Los Angeles. Oliver Goodall, public information officer of Tuskegee Airmen Inc., will present a book display and the films, “From These Beginnings” and “Wings for This Man.” Free.

“An Afternoon With Our Authors”--1 p.m., California Afro-American Museum, Kinsey Auditorium, Exposition Boulevard and Figueroa Street. Four authors will discuss and sign their books. Admission free. Parking is $2.
