Family Leave Legislation
As licensed marriage and family therapists we are very aware of the multitude of stresses borne by the American family, and we welcome passage of the family leave bill (Feb. 5-6). We hope this marks the beginning of more positive steps toward valuing and bolstering family life.
Life in general and marriage in particular have built-in stressors that are exacerbated by the continuous changes taking place between individuals and in the society in which we live. Additionally, so many of today’s families consist of one parent who has total responsibility or two parents who both work outside the home. Very simply, time, energy and money have become scarce commodities.
Therapists and counselors feel the frustration of trying to assist couples and families to resolve problems while the world around us shows little interest or understanding in the benefits of promoting mental health. We are hopeful this Administration sees things differently, and will continue to make family needs a priority. Then, we will truly be able to talk about family values.
