Turkey’s Approach
Richard Boudreaux’s article (Feb. 12) on the rupture of the gas pipeline to Armenia gave an accurate depiction of how serious the economic and political situation in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabagh is today. Thus, making the active intervention of the international community (both to provide humanitarian assistance and to resolve the conflict in Nagorno-Karabagh) imperative.
Iran has always been a positive and neutral force in this region and the author’s depiction of (Iran) as an ally of Azerbaijan is erroneous and implies that they have unfriendly relations with Armenia.
Rep. Joseph Kennedy, who recently traveled to Armenia after a meeting with Turkish President Turgut Ozal, in which he portrayed his nation as a friend of Armenia, should understand that Turkey is engaged in an expensive public relations campaign to improve its image by promising to aid Armenia. The fact remains, however, that Turkey relentlessly helps Azerbaijan in its war efforts over Nagorno-Karabagh; and so far has not fulfilled, in any meaningful way, its promise to lift the blockade it has imposed on humanitarian aid headed to Armenia.
