From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Transit officials said the motormen in charge of two commuter trains were at fault for a crash in the Gary, Ind., area last month in which seven commuters were killed and dozens of others injured. One motorman misread a signal and the other failed to react fast enough to prevent the head-on collision, officials said. Both men have been fired. The crash occurred in the morning at the end of a one-track bridge on the South Shore commuter line, which daily carries 12,000 passengers between Chicago and northern Indiana. The crash caved in part of the lead cars of both trains, crushing passengers in their seats. The dead included a 10-year-old boy from Michigan going to visit his father in Chicago.
