MILE HIGH: The toughest heartbreak for Irvine’s Greg Whiteley was finishing fourth in the 1,500 meters in last year’s Olympic trials--one off a ticket to Barcelona. But fun for Whiteley was last week in the Bahamas, when he set a five-kilometer American road record--13 minutes and 26 seconds. Says proud father John Whiteley: “He pushes himself to get maximum use of his talent.” . . . Whiteley, now a University of Oregon law student, will run the mile in tonight’s Sunkist Invitational in Los Angeles.
