Man of Substance

I wish to clarify a point I made when speaking to Richard Stayton as he prepared his profile of Jon Robin Baitz (Jan. 17).

Baitz’s generous offer to forgo his royalties did not stem from “financial trouble” faced by the Seattle Repertory Theatre. Last year, I worked with him on the New York production of “Substance of Fire” and planned to include the play in the Seattle Repertory Theatre’s 1992-93 season. In a conversation about our 1991-92 season, I commented on the challenge of balancing the budget. Baitz, demonstrating his belief in the theater and its commitment to new play development, offered to donate his royalties for the upcoming season to the theater to help assure a balanced budget for 1992-93.

I would like to confirm that the Seattle Repertory Theatre continues to maintain a strong financial base during uncertain times for many arts institutions.
